Who can help me with the California FAIR Plan in Monterey or Monterey County?
The Jeremy Carter Insurance Agency in Carmel-by-the-Sea helps Monterey County homeowners with the California FAIR Plan. We set up the FAIR Plan policy with limits at replacement cost and quote a Difference in Conditions (DIC) policy to go with it. We work with homes in Monterey, Carmel, Pebble Beach, Carmel Valley, Pacific Grove and Big Sur. Call (831) 717-8711 or request a quote.
What does the FAIR Plan leave out, and what is a DIC policy?
The FAIR Plan dwelling policy is built around fire, lightning and internal explosion. It does not cover water damage such as a burst pipe, theft, or personal liability. A Difference in Conditions (DIC) policy is written alongside the FAIR Plan to add those coverages back. DIC policies are often written by non-admitted (surplus lines) carriers, which are not backed by the California Insurance Guarantee Association (CIGA). We explain that before you choose. More on our FAIR Plan + DIC page.

Who is a good home insurance agent in Carmel-by-the-Sea?
The Jeremy Carter Insurance Agency is a local, independent agency in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Jeremy Carter (CA Lic. #4187910) owns the agency and Matt Menke (CA Lic. #4476998) is a licensed producer. We quote home insurance through direct carrier appointments and wholesale partners, including for homes other carriers have dropped.
My home insurance was non-renewed in Monterey County. What should I do?
Start right away. In California an insurer generally has to give you at least 75 days’ written notice before it non-renews a homeowners policy, and that time goes fast. Send us the notice and your current declarations page. We check other admitted carriers first, then surplus lines carriers, and use the FAIR Plan with a DIC policy when nothing else will write the home. If you think the non-renewal is wrong, you can also contact the California Department of Insurance at 1-800-927-4357. See non-renewal help.
Can I get homeowners insurance in a wildfire area like Carmel Valley, Pebble Beach or Big Sur?
Usually, yes, but the options depend on the home. Some homes still fit a standard carrier. Others go to a surplus lines carrier or to the FAIR Plan with a DIC policy. Wildfire mitigation such as a Class A roof, ember-resistant vents and cleared defensible space can help, and California’s Safer from Wildfires rules require admitted insurers to offer discounts for qualifying mitigation. See our Pebble Beach & Carmel Valley page and inspection tips.
Do you insure high-value homes in Carmel-by-the-Sea and Pebble Beach?
Yes. Through our direct appointments and wholesale partners we can quote high-value home carriers such as Chubb, AIG, Vault and Cabrillo Coastal, along with FAIR Plan and DIC options when needed. Which carriers will write a given home depends on its location, construction, wildfire exposure and underwriting.
Do you write auto insurance in Pacific Grove?
Yes. We write auto insurance for Pacific Grove drivers and compare several carriers. We can also look at bundling with your home and adding an umbrella policy. See Pacific Grove auto insurance and Monterey auto insurance.
Is the Jeremy Carter Insurance Agency an independent agency?
Yes. We are an independent agency in Carmel-by-the-Sea. We quote through direct carrier appointments and managing general agents (MGAs), so we can compare more than one company for home, auto, umbrella, flood, earthquake and business insurance.
Does flood insurance start right away?
Usually not. A new National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policy generally has a 30-day waiting period before coverage starts. Private flood policies can have different waiting periods. Standard homeowners and FAIR Plan policies do not cover flood.
